Paul,
Figured I'd go ahead and give you the pics and the step by step on the crab. so here it is.... Step 1: Place hook in vise and attach eyes far enough away from the eye of the hook to allow for a weed guard. Step 2: Move thread to back of hook to the start of the bend and attach a small clump of flashabou about 1.5 inches long. Step 3: Select two like-sized hackles and attach them on either side of the hook at the same tie in point as the flashabou, in a manner so that the hackles curve away from each other. Step 4: Starting at the same tie in point cut a piece of Mylar chord about 2 inches long and remove the cotton center. Figure eight the chord to the shank of the hook so that it is firmly centered and secure. Cut another section and tie in directly in front of the first section. (note: when starting to tie the second section, start with your thread behind the first and begin by figure-eighting them together, then move the thread between the two and secure the body section individually. Step 5: After securing the second body section. Move the thread back between the two sections and tie in rubber legs so that the legs extend approx. 2 inches away from the hook on each side. Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the body material reaches the back of the eyes. Step 7: Move the thread in front of the eyes and attach a weed guard of your choice. I prefer doubled #60 mono. Whip finish and you're done tying. Step 8: Pulling you're rubber legs out of the way trim the Mylar chord in the shape of a crab body. (Note: leave the Mylar in chord form until the fly is finished). After the body is shaped, use your fingers to fray the Mylar out. Fly is finished, Go fishing! Mad Mike Benson |
