Hilton Head Inshore Fishing Report Off The Hook Fishing Charters

The inshore fishing has been great the past few weeks despite the cool nasty weather we have had. Redfish and trout have been the main target for my clients using live shrimp or mudminnows below a popping cork. There is still a good amount of shrimp in the creeks but with the water temps dropping the shrimp should be heading offshore then artifical lures will be the trick for the remainder of the winter for reds and trout. 1/4 ounce jigheads rigged with a gulp shrimp has also been working great for both reds and trout. If my clients have been flyfishing, clouser minnows have been the trick for the reds and trout. Check out some of my latest pic's on my website or on my blog. (more)
Capt John Ward - Just returned from SKA Nationals and had a blast. We placed 11th overall and top boat from SC with a 45 and 42 pound fish. The bite was the best I have ever seen on Friday we boated 71 kings between 18-45 pounds even caught 15 casting lures, and broke off another 30 fish. Day before we prefished and caught bait, while jigging we caught tons of: jacks, runners, pompano, triggers, and snapper. This last week I fished 5 trips in 4 days and the water is cooling down 59-63 degrees but the bite is still strong with : reds, trout, black drum, and sheeps head. Monday my group caught 20 redfish and 21 sea trout mostly on Zman lures. More.......

Grand Strand - Spottail Bass: Very good. Perry’s Bait and Tackle (843-651-2895) reports that nice catches of slot sized red drum and short fish in the 13 inch range continue to be reported in the creeks. Finger mullet continue to be the hot bait. On low tide fish can be found on creek edges and patrolling around oyster rakes; on higher tides the fish will move alongside and then into the grass. Bigger fish can be found in the surf and around the jetties.

Saturday October 10th, 2009 the 18th annual Josh Thomas Memorial Creek Slam was held in McClellanville, SC. We had another successful turnout with 70 boats. The weather cooperated, although there was some wind, the rain held off. Plenty of fish were caught with a surprising number of flounder, including two 6+lb’ers. 1st Place and $1901.25 went to Ross and Oliver Thames....

Hilton Head Fishing Report by Off The Hook Charters

The fishing this month has been absolutely fantastic! I had one of my best years catching giant jack crevalle in the 25-30lb range. I have had very good luck coming across these large schools of giant jacks usually on my way out or on the way back in from my fishing spots. The sandbars have been great for big spanish mackerel, lady fish, blue fish and very good sized sharks. I have also had some great luck with my clients going after tailing reds on the high tides. After this mornings catch of a total at least 30 reds and 20 trout on the low tide. I think September is going to be a great month as well.

Here are a few pic's from the past week of some great fish.

Fishincoach New moon tides Bluffton SC

The new moon tides last week slowed the inshore Spanish bite as well as all the other critters in the sound, but was a bonus for the Redfish. We has a full week of good tailing tides starting with the evening high water last Monday and changing to the morning high water around Wednesday. There were plenty of Red Tails to chase but I noticed two things, with the bright skies the fish were super spooky and as the high water was later or more in the middle of the day we found less fish on the flats. The two baits of choice were the Dipsy Doodle coated with a good dose of Shrimp Luncker Sauce. This bait has good weight for casting in windy conditions and is rigged weedless. The technique was to cast beyond the fish and reel the bait back to the fish on top of the water, when within a foot or so of the fish let the bait fall to the bottom resembling a crab trying to dig into the mud. We also used a Gulp shrimp rigged weedless with a short fluorocarbon leader and a 1/4 ounce slip sinker. Same technique as the Dipsy Doodle, Redfish do like the Gulp baits. That first run in less than a foot of water after the bite will get any fisherman's blood flowing! Not to mention Tarpon jumped in the sound yesterday.

Spanish Mackerel Blitz - Clear water in the sound produced a great bite on the in coming tide for Spanish Mackerel this week A little chum, live menhaden or herring fished on a light King Rig over the sandbars was the ticket for lots of fun on light tackle. Of course the sharks are still chomping especially the Black Nose type and we also did battle with a 5 foot Lemon Shark in 3 feet of water just off one of our Redfish flats. Tarpon are still spotty but we are keeping our fingers crossed for a mega run soon.

Catcher in the Wheat - New Article by J Yates

My right hand bore an ancient fly rod case crafted from a sturdy piece of oak and some canvas and string. It had been constructed when TR was in office, I had eventually discovered. The rod within had belonged to my great-grandfather. He had been the intellectual type, a college professor teaching English Lit at one of those ivy covered schools in the northeast. Fly fishing for trout seemed to be an appropriate pastime for men like him and he took to it like a big brown to a caddis fly. When he finally moved on to that eternal stream where the fish are all large and take flies just often enough, he bequeathed his precious rod to his son. John, however, showed no interest in it. Neither did his son, who left it in a dark corner of a basement until the natural progression of time led to it being placed in my eager hands....

Put lines out and picked up a nice king right away. Only 2 other boats out there today and sounded like they had a rather slow bite. We were steady all day, ended the day with: 2 kings, one about 35 lbs and lost another at the boat, 6 dolphin, 1 30 lb wahoo, 1 big amber jack, 1 really small black fin tuna (small being about 8 inches long), a bonita and a bunch of cudas

Everybody had a real good time and plan another trip in October.
June Inshore Fishing Report - AvidAngling

Location: Charleston, SC
Redfish - Crabs, Cut Mullet/Menhaden, Mudminnows, Spoons, you name it, the reds have been biting it all. The reds are in the flats (we got a nice 32" last week), docks, jetties and tailing in the grass. With the warm water, the fish are active.

Trout - Trout fishing has been good. I have been fishing points and oyster beds at creek mouths with popping corks with live menhaden underneath. Menhaden are thick in the harbor right now, so bring a cast net with you!

Flounder - We have been catching flounder an anything from mehaden to electric chicken jigs. Along with a 4.8 pounder that took first place in a tournament a few weeks ago, yesterday on charter we got a 3 pounder while flyfishing with an electric chicken clouser.

Spanish Mackerel - The Spanish are definitely here in good numbers. I have been fishing for them while the current rips out. Look for the birds diving and some surface action from the fish.

Jacks - I have seen a few jacks on the surface while fishing for Spanish Mackerel, but have not targeted them yet. They are definitely here though. This means that the tarpon are sure to be around as well.

Bonnethead Sharks - Shark fishing is great right now and is full of action. If you want to fight nice fish on light tackle, battling bonnetheads is a blast. Crab or Menhaden with their tail cut off has been working great while fished onthe bottom.

Cobia - I have been landing 2 per trip on my nearshore charters on average. A friend of mine caught some in the harbor during a charter this week.

Bluefish, Ladyfish, Seabass, Gar (on the flats after all the rain) , Toadfish, Stingrays, Whiting, and Croacker have all been picking up on my bottom rigs while trying for larger fish.

It is a blast to drop a live bait over the side of the boat and have a Cobia swim out and grab your offering. The good news is the Cobia are on the way out but the Kings and a few Tarpon are on the way in. This week fishing the surface all the radio talk is about landing Kings from 15 to over 30lbs.
After fishing the golf stream for two days this past weekend- Reds
Excellent, Grouper good but small,
Triggers very good, jacks very good, dolphin very poor, barracuda and sharks stealing hooked fish, mackerel fair with trolling.
Occasional good in smaller fish as sea bass etc Bait used squid, cigar minnows, occasional shrimp and mallet. Fish good on bottom and up to ten feet off bottom. drifting ok for mackerel.
Dolphin not interested at all in anything. Take this info for what it's worth. I'm not a professional, but I realize what's going on

Fishing has gone from good to great over the past couple of months in Charleston. Fish are aggressive and feeding better now that the water is warm and the creeks are loaded with bait. Bugs aren't too bad and the weather has been cooperating lately as well.

Requirements Change for SC Saltwater Recreational Fishing License

The recent session of the South Carolina General Assembly made changes to the Saltwater Recreational Fishing License effective July 1, 2009. The new legislation will require a saltwater recreational fishing license for people who: Recreationally fish from shore (beach, bank, private dock, free public pier, etc.) or recreationally harvest shrimp and/or crab. The changes also ensure that anglers in S.C. will simply need to purchase a single license to fish anywhere in both state and federal saltwaters. Revenue generated from Saltwater Recreational Fishing License sales will be used for the direct benefit of South Carolina’s marine recreational fisheries.

Fishing has been great lately, catching some nice trout on artificials (paddletail grubs w/ chartreuse, gulp shrimp, etc..) and live menhaden, seems to be the best near inlets, redfishing has been good around docks, oysters points, and white shell banks, been getting them on gulps in dark colors and live mullet, flounder have been picking up inshore as well, haven't been sheepshead fishing in awhile but I am sure they are around inshore. Also been catching more aj's and picked up a 45 # cobia on live menhaden a couple of days ago. Spadefish and Bonnetheads will be my focus later this month.
Capt Rick Hiott. The bite is on guys!! I have also been getting good reports from the other Captains in the area. Other than the wind and a little rain, this last week has been great! The trout bite has picked up, the medium size red drum is going great and the flounder are starting to show up. The trout are being caught on top water, cut and live menhaden, DOA shrimp and Gulp shrimp under a rattle float. The red drum we have put in the boat (and back in the water) are inhaling cut menhaden, cut mullet, live menhaden and live mullet on the bottom.

Myrtle Beach Murrells Inlet Report

Capt. Shannon Currie April fishing started off a little slow but the end has come around.........Fished today with a group from Mich. 2 girls and a dad put the smack down on the Spanish Macks. We had 40 in the boat by 12 noon. the bait was everywhere and the fish were hungry. Fishing the Myrtle Beach area is a little tricky. We have a great place but if the bait ain't here the fish aren't either. Still waiting on the water to warm some more for the kings and Red Drum to show up in numbers but it won't be long now.....So get out the fishing gear and go get you some if you in the Myrtle Beach area.
