Here is a photo of the one red I caught yesterday. 10 pounds on the boga. Got him on a homemade gold tinsel fly, which he absolutely smashed. I missed the largest red I have ever seen on the flats- or that MIKE has ever seen- a monster about 13-15 pounds. He laid up on his side and tried to eat the fly, but it caught on a piece of grass and he turned off after it seemed to be in his mouth- crazy deal. The fish was maybe 15 or 20 feet from the boat, so I got a great view. I was very disappointed and embarrassed that I failed to get that fish, but it was really neat to watch him try to eat. When his tail came out of the water to feed, it was broader than my hand spread as wide as I can get it. A true giant red on the flats. Of course, a 10 pounder is also an excellent red. We really rarely catch those, but it was dwarfed by this log of a fish. We got rained on a good bit, but an excellent day anyway.
Hope you’re having a good weekend.
James

Yates Redfish

There is nothing better than sightcasting to tailing or cruising reds with a fly rod.
Last Saturday Jan 7, my buddy and I fished McClellanville for reds on fly. They really respondxed to a fly I bought at the Charleston Angler called the Balck Wiggler-I subsequently have found it extremely easy to tie- just bend a 3 long 1-0 hook into a gentle curve, then tie on a simple polar flsh tail and a small sprig of marabou. Wrap metallic estaz to the eye and tie off- no eyes needed. They seem to love it- tie plenty though as I lst a number to the oyster shells which carpet the bottom in the are we were fishing.
