My older daughter, Jessica, is an avid outdoors-person, I suppose is the politically correct term. She enjoyed a belated Christmas gift last week when she and I ventured to Central America in search of 7 sails a'leapin. We weren't disappointed, at least not totally. Although the fishing was an order of magnitude slower than my previous experiences there, we still managed to raise 3- 5 sails a day and Jessica was able to cast to, hook, fight, and land ON FLY an enormous Pacific sail of 110 pounds, estimated.

We stayed at Sailfish Bay Lodge, a world class ( don't you hate that over used term, even though it is very true in this case ?) lodge. Here is a view from the thatched roof kitchen/dining area where we enjoyed breakfast and dinner each day. It is hard to see on this photo, but in the distance lies at least two active volcanoes, each occasionally burping smoke and brimstone, reminding me of certain Baptist preachers I have known.

These sails are quite athletic, very strong fighters, and look like they have joined A-Rod in partaking of a little performance enhancing substances. Their acrobatic jumps are heart stopping and seem to be repeated numerous times for our enjoyment.

Sailfish were not the only sea creatures we were privileged to observe out there.

It seems that I was not the only large creature on the Pacific sea that day!
It was a great trip, all in all. We caught bonito, dorado, etc, and had a great time. The folks at the lodge were amazing. The only thing they failed to do was actually wipe our butts for us, although they likely would have done that if we had asked!!!

Highly recommended trip, if a bit pricey. If you would like to see more about a previous trip I took to SFB a couple years ago, pick up the current ( March/April) issue of Sporting Classics magazine.
